◆ Small business

Giving small businesses a fighting chance.

The big chains have call centers, night shifts and whole marketing teams. You have a front desk of two and an owner who does everything. Here's how the tools we built level the field.

Every small business owner knows the feeling. You do great work. Your customers love you. But when someone new finds you online, you're up against companies with ten times your staff and a phone that never goes to voicemail.

That isn't a fair fight, and it has nothing to do with who does the better work. It comes down to who answers first, who follows up, and who is still there at 9pm when the customer finally has time to reach out.

We know that fight well, because we've spent years hearing about it from the owners living it.

I. Why we built this

Years of listening, built into every feature.

Before DNA+, Jesse Fugate was an account executive with multiple companies. His job was sitting across from small business owners and listening, and for years he heard the same problems: leads that couldn't be answered fast enough, phones ringing while the team was busy with customers, follow-ups that slipped because nobody had time to send them.

These were good businesses with loyal customers. They weren't losing because their work was worse. They were losing because a bigger company had more hands.

Devin Myers saw the same fight from another angle. He spent years working to close the gap between corporate-owned locations and franchise locations that were competing with far less capital. He always believed growing small businesses couldn't stay competitive for one simple reason: the overhead outpaced the revenue it generated.

Together, Jesse and Devin worked to build DNA+ Connect and Connect Voice around everything they learned: tools that give a small team big-team coverage without big-team overhead. Every feature answers a problem a small business owner described. The goal isn't just to help small businesses keep up with the big guys. It's to make sure they thrive.

II. The two sides of the table

The big guys aren't better. They're just always on.

What a large chain brings to every new customer, and what most small businesses can staff.

The big chain

  • A call center that answers on the first ring
  • Night and weekend shifts
  • Reps whose only job is following up
  • Bilingual staff on every shift
  • Someone running the CRM and the reports

The small business

  • A front desk that's also checking people in
  • Phones that go quiet at closing time
  • Follow-up when someone finds a spare minute
  • Whoever is on shift, in whatever language they speak
  • An owner who is also the marketer, the manager and the CRM admin

III. Customers don't grade on a curve

Speed wins, whatever your size.

The person filling out your form at 9pm doesn't know you're a team of four. They're comparing you with whoever got back to them first, and most of the time they book with that business.

"Most companies are not responding nearly fast enough."Oldroyd, McElheran & Elkington, "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads," Harvard Business Review, March 2011

That was true of big companies with full sales teams. For a small business, the gap is wider, because there simply aren't enough hours or hands to answer every lead and every call the moment it comes in. That's the gap our tools close.

IV. Where small businesses lose

Five gaps, and what fills them.

Most lost customers slip through the same few cracks. None of them are about effort.

The 9pm formLeads come in after close and wait until morning, when they've already booked somewhere that answered.

The busy front deskThe phone rings while your team is checking someone in, and the caller hangs up.

Connect VoicePicks up the calls your desk can't get to, on the number you already have.

The one-and-done follow-upOne text, maybe a call, then the lead goes quiet and nobody has time to chase it.

DNA+ ConnectFollows up for weeks, with call tasks for your team when a call is the better move.

VI. What doesn't change

Your people are still your edge.

The reason customers love small businesses is the people. The owner who remembers their name. The front desk that knows how they like their appointment. No tool replaces that, and ours aren't trying to.

What they replace is the part that wears your team down: the missed calls, the late-night forms, the fourth follow-up nobody had time to send. When that runs on its own, your team gets to spend its time on the customers in front of them. That's the fight small businesses win.
